Anatomy:

Inguinal hernias are protrusions of abdominal cavity contents through an area of the abdominal wall commonly referred to as the groin. The groin is the crease at the junction of the torso with the legs and the adjacent region that includes the external genitals.

Mechanism of Injury:
  • Weakness of the muscles and connective tissue layers of the abdominal wall.
Symptoms
  • Hernias present as bulges in the groin area, which commonly disappears on lying down.
  • Swelling appears at some point along the inner half of a line between the pubic tubercle and anterior superior iliac crest.
  • Pain in the groin, which is triggered by exertion or even by coughing, sneezing and straining.
