  Patella Tendon Overuse Injury  
 

 
Anatomy:

The patella tendon attaches the quadriceps femoris muscle (anterior thigh muscles) to the tibial tuberosity (bony prominence on the lower leg bone), indirectly via the patella (kneecap).

Mechanism of Injury:
  • Overuse or poor biomechanics can cause inflammation and degeneration of the tendon.
Symptoms
  • Pain of gradual onset.
  • Pain and tenderness at the lower part of the patella is common.
  • Thickening of the proximal patellar tendon may be present.
  • Hypotrophy of the muscles is often associated with this injury, as well as tightness of the quadriceps.
