The
patella tendon attaches the quadriceps femoris muscle (anterior
thigh muscles) to the tibial tuberosity (bony prominence
on the lower leg bone), indirectly via the patella (kneecap).
Mechanism of
Injury:
Overuse or poor biomechanics can cause inflammation and
degeneration of the tendon.
Symptoms
Pain of gradual onset.
Pain and tenderness at the lower part of the patella
is common.
Thickening of the
proximal patellar tendon may
be present.
Hypotrophy of the muscles is often associated
with this injury, as well as tightness of the quadriceps.
